Katnook Estate

Coonawarra

Located in the South East corner of South Australia, Coonawarra is one of the most remote wine regions in the world. It lies in the cool Limestone Coast GI (Geographical Indication) region, 370km south east of Adelaide and 450km west of Melbourne.  Its nearest population centre, Mount Gambier, lies to the south.

Coonawarra is one of the very few wine regions in the world in which its terroir is a combination of rare, rust coloured terra rossa soils and a cool maritime climate. In fact, Katnook is an aboriginal word, loosely translating to ‘Fat Land’, a reference to the abundance of the region.

The Limestone Coast hosts a landscape derived from the break-up of Gondwanaland, whereby the separation and movement of the Australian continent away from the Antarctic continent produced a seaway (the Southern Ocean). Basins associated with this new continental margin became subject to sedimentary infilling. It is upon these varied deposits that the Limestone Coast Wine Zone has developed.
