Visiting Coonawarra

Best wine regions to visit in South Australia, Coonawarra

Coonawarra (see map here) lies roughly halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide – and around 40km north of Mount Gambier, which is serviced by an airport. Due to its relative isolation, Coonawarra is not as crowded as many famous Australian wine regions, so those who make the journey are rewarded with highly personalised service. Coonawarra is a fantastic way to begin or end a tour of Victoria’s world famous Great Ocean Road and is not far from the famous seaside village of Robe, South Australia.

Our local village of Penola (6.6km to our south) is the perfect place to stay. It’s famous for its historic walks and St Mary McKillop museum, a tribute to Australia’s first saint, who worked in our region and was canonised in 2010.

Penola boasts one of South Australia’s most awarded regional restaurants, Pipers of Penola, exclusive accommodation Must at Coonawarra and a great motel style at Alexander Cameron Suites.

We are just 35km south of Naracoorte Caves, one of the world’s most important fossil sites.
